Drip Design Guide
This drip design guide is most appropriate for residential applications. Our goal was to outline the basics so the homeowner
could install a system in one day. In most cases, residential water pressure and volume is sufficient to supply virtually all
drip and microspray applications around the house. As long as a few rules are followed, which we will point out, you should
be able to easily layout, design and install a drip system in one day.
Step 1. Scale Drawing Make a relatively good scale
drawing of the area you want to irrigate. Mark the different
types of plants in the irrigation area and your water source.
Step 2. Selecting Emitters Determine the
best drip emitter, emitter tubing or microspray that will
meet the water requirements of your plants. In a perfect
world, each different type of emitter would be operated by
a separate valve so you could fine tune the water days
and run time to optimize the irrigation. However, we
usually have to combine emitter types on one valve due to
cost and space considerations.
Drip Emitter Selection
There are many varibles to consider when selecting
emitters: run times, water days, amount of sun or shade,
soil type, slope and rooting depth of the plant. With drip
systems it is easy to add or subtract emitters to get the
proper irrigation. Color or annual flowers like to be
microsprayed because of their shallow rooting depths and
frequent changes of seasonal color make it challenging to
use individual drip emitters.
Drip flow is rated in gallons per hour (gph). Lawn sprinklers
are specified in gallons per minute (gpm).
